It’s certainly been a major week for fans of The Witcher. CD Projekt Red surprised us all by unveiling their upcoming slate and can I just say, no one was more surprised than games journalists like myself who were unexpectedly thrust into speed-typing overdrive. I survived. Thank you for asking.
CDPR officially confirmed five new games set in The Witcher universe. The Witcher 4, which was officially unveiled back in March, is now codenamed ‘Polaris’ and will kickstart a brand new trilogy. There’s also ‘Canis Majoris’ which is set to be a separate Witcher story made by an external studio, plus a multiplayer Witcher codenamed ‘Sirius.’ Let’s rewind back to ‘Polaris’ for a second though, because The Witcher 4 seemingly has a release window.
Take a look at this incredible Witcher inspired artwork.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released all the way back in 2015 and whilst we’re calling ‘Polaris’ The Witcher 4, developers have warned it’s not a straight-up sequel. That being said, it is the follow-up game so try and wrap your heads around that one. Bottom line is, fans are desperate for some more Witcher action but we now know that ‘Polaris’ won’t launch until 2025 - 10 years after The Witcher 3.
Advert
As reported by GameRant, CD Projekt Red president Adam Kicinski recently responded to an investor question revealing that ‘Polaris’ would not be released until 2025. There is a good reason for this though. The game is set to use Unreal Engine 5 which would see CDPR moving on from REDengine 4 and this, of course, takes time.
Kicinski further explained that a Witcher game typically takes around three years to develop so we could see the sequels to ‘Polaris’ land in 2028 and 2031, so we’ve got some waiting ahead of us folks. As they say, good things come to those who wait.
