It’s been several days since HBO’s The Last of Us series premiered but we still have plenty of work to do when it comes to dissecting every frame. Before we know it, episode two will be upon us and the whole process will start again. If you’re a fellow The Last of Us stan, isn’t it wonderful to thrive?
HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s iconic 2013 game is a colossal success. It marks HBO’s second-largest debut in over a decade, losing out only to House of the Dragon. Fans have heaped praise on the opening episode, although you may have missed one cool cameo. It’s only in retrospect that most fans also noticed just how close Joel and Sarah came to being infected. It’s fair to say that The Last of Us is a faithful adaptation. There’s one scene in particular that perfectly mirrors the video game.
Take a look at what’s in store in the season ahead.
It’s the kind of scene that Halo fans could only dream of. Too soon? Too soon. It features Joel and Ellie shortly after the duo meet. After agreeing to transport Ellie out of the city, Joel enjoys a snooze in his apartment while Ellie wonders what to do with herself. The scene basically plays out line for line as it does in the game. Take a look below.
It’s not the only instance of this happening. I hate to bring it up again but Sarah’s death is also essentially a shot-for-shot recreation of what happens in the game. Sarah gifting Joel his watch also fits the bill - and you can view both instances below. I’ll warn you though, watching two versions of Sarah’s death run concurrently side-by-side is just pure emotional pain. If you’re a fan of The Last of Us though, chances are you’re used to dealing with that.
The show is also full of easter eggs. In case you missed it, episode one featured a heartbreaking nod to Part II. Did anyone else notice that when Joel, Tess, and Ellie were spotted by the FEDRA guard in the show, the same noise sounded as when you break stealth in the game? Chef’s kiss.
