To say that HBO’s The Last of Us was a major success still manages to feel like an understatement. I really never thought I’d see my non-gaming friends tell me what big fans they are of the show. It’s a beautiful thing to behold.
It goes without saying then that surely when awards season next rolls around, The Last of Us will be up for every accolade it’s eligible for. The series was renewed for a second season after just a couple of episodes had aired - and pre-production on that is officially now underway. In recent days, Sky - which is where the show airs in the UK - revealed that the season finale was their most-watched final episode of all-time for a debut series. Well, The Last of Us has now been nominated for its first set of awards - including one for the series’ most controversial moment.
The Last of Us Part I recently launched on PC.
Nominations for The MTV Movie Awards have been announced and The Last of Us has garnered five nominations. It’s up for ‘Best Show’, ‘Best Hero’ for Pedro Pascal as Joel, ‘Breakthrough Performance’ for Bella Ramsey as Ellie, ‘Best Duo’ for Pedro and Bella, and ‘Best Kiss’. This is where it gets somewhat bizarre though. The ‘Best Kiss’ nomination is for the smooch shared between Anna Torv’s Tess and Philip Prajoux’s infected. Yes, that kiss of death.

In case you’ve forgotten what happened, and I can’t imagine you have, an infected approached the already-infected Tess towards the end of episode two, transferring the cordyceps fungus into her via her mouth. It was a weird moment that ended up looking like some kind of mushroom-infested kiss which, to be honest, is exactly what it was I suppose. It’s a scene that split fans.
It’s a strange scene to nominate though. Think of the heartwarming kiss that took place between Bill and Frank in the critically acclaimed episode three, ‘Long Long Time’. I also thought Bella Ramsey and Storm Reid had wonderful chemistry in ‘Left Behind’. I’ll admit, I haven’t watched The MTV Movie Awards in many years but I know the winners used to recreate the kiss. I hope we don’t have to see this one unfold again.
