Matt Reeves ‘The Batman’ starring Robert Pattinson has had its sequel confirmed. What’s more, it will also be part of a trilogy.
Earlier this week, DC Studios chiefs, James Gunn and Peter Safran announced plans for the new DC Universe which will begin in 2025.
The current DCEU will end with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which will then lead into chapter one of the DCU called “Gods and Monsters”. This phase will include a total of five movies and five TV series between 2025 and 2027.
As of this year, the final movies in the DCEU will be Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and finally, the aforementioned Aquaman sequel. James Gunn also stated that The Flash will reset everything, but, it was not detailed how.

However, as reported by Den of the Geek, when this reset happens and we lead into the new DCU, one movie that won’t be impacted is Matt Reeves’ The Batman. This Caped Crusader tale has never been part of the DCEU, to begin with. It’s been more of an Elseworlds entry and it seems it will remain that way, at least for now.
The same will also be the case for Todd Philips's Joker movies starring Joaquin Phoenix. Back in August 2022, it was confirmed that Lady Gaga would co-star as Harley Quinn in the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, set to release in cinemas in October 2024.
So rather than being under the DCU banner, The Batman and Joker movies will fall under DC Elseworlds. Personally, I’m perfectly happy for both franchises to remain as its own entities unless they can be incorporated into the new DCU in a meaningful and somewhat logical way. If not, I’m happy either way.
That being said, what we do know for sure is that The Batman - Part II is confirmed and it will be part of a trilogy. “Matt Reeves is working on The Batman 2, which he thinks of as a Batman crime saga, which also includes The Penguin TV series, and it is its own thing,” explained Gunn. “He’s hard at work on that. He came in and pitched us some amazing, really cool stuff the other day. So our plan is for that to continue.”

Regardless of whether or not The Batman makes its way into the DCU, we’re still getting new Batman movies, alongside the ones starring Robert Pattinson. A new Batman and Robin movie based on The Brave and the Bold featuring Damian Wayne as Bruce’s sidekick is said to be the “beginning of the Bat family in the DCU.”
All this is in addition to the announcement of Superman: Legacy for which former WWE Superstar-turned-Hollywood actor, Dave Bautista is already throwing his name in the hat to be cast as Lex Luthor.
At the time of writing, release dates haven't been announced for the new DCU entries. However, we do know that The Batman - Part II is currently slated to release on October 3rd, 2025.
