Don’t get us wrong, contemporary The Legend of Zelda is stunning to behold and play. But we can’t help but miss the days of its classic dungeon-crawler era, back when it was less about looks and more about the story and combat.
If you too enjoy classic Legend of Zelda outings, you should check out a free Steam game that promises action, adventure, and lots of monsters. This punchy little game is fast-paced and filled with colour, each dungeon you explore is filled with different hordes to battle and overcome.
How gorgeous is the remake of Link's Awakening? An oldie but goodie
“Great combat feel, the dungeon layouts seem to be different every time,” shared one satisfied crawler. “The basic gameplay is insanely addictive, but the relics and power-ups are just hilarious, like the buzzsaws and exploding footballs that bounce around creating havoc, the portal gun and whatever else.”

We know the word “addictive” sets off alarm bells in those outside the gaming community, but we assure you there’s nothing life alteringly bad about Monster Crawl: Warrior. It just has an undeniable pull that makes you want to keep playing, pushing deeper and deeper into the mysteries of the dungeons you visit.
Amongst the hordes of rampaging monsters are boss fights, a feature which can strike dread in the heart of some. Yet, there’s nothing Souls-like about what you have to face, which is a relief for cosy gamers like myself. “I normally hate bosses, but King Rat is challenging without being boringly overly difficult like bosses in a lot of games, and it's hilarious when he shakes baby rats out of his fur.”
There’s challenge to be found in this Steam game, but never so much it’ll have you crying into your morning coffee as you contemplate your life choices.
Furthermore, Monster Crawl: Warrior will always be free to play as it’s the free version of Monster Crawl, the full version of what you get a glimpse of in this outing. The full game isn’t out yet but its launch is “coming soon”, meaning you won’t have to wait long.
