Capcom has announced that a new Resident Evil game is on the way, confirming what was easily one of the industry's worst kept secrets.
The Japanese developer confirmed the news during last night’s digital Capcom Next showcase. While details on the next entry in the iconic survival horror series were kept to a bare minimum, current series director Kōshi Nakanishi did reveal that a new Resident Evil is in development.
Check out the Resident Evil Village trailer below!
Notably, Kōshi Nakanishi has worked on the likes of Resident Evil Revelations and its sequel, as well as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. It’s not 100% clear whether the new Resident Evil game will be a direct sequel or a remade classic of yesteryear, but we can at least speculate - and Resident Evil 9 feels like the most likely bet.

Capcom has garnered huge success with its remakes from the 2002 Nintendo GameCube Resident Evil to more recent entries such as Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4. Recent rumours have suggested that Resident Evil Code: Veronica or Resident Evil 5 could be next in line to receive the makeover treatment.
Heck, there’s even been speculation that the original Resident Evil could be remade again and perhaps even its prequel, Resident Evil Zero. Of course, at this time, all that speculation is unfounded until it’s officially confirmed by Capcom.
That being said, if we are to take the words of Kōshi Nakanishi as gospel, his exact wording during Capcom Next was, “We’re making a new Resident Evil.” This likely implies that this will be a sequel to 2021’s Resident Evil Village which concluded the Ethan Winters saga, so we could possibly get a new character in the next game or a returning favourite.

Typically, when Capcom teases a new Resident Evil, the next game has usually been in development for quite a while but we can only guess at this time when it might be released. Whether it’s Resident Evil 9 or a remade classic, I'll be having my fingers crossed for a 2025 release.
