What if we combined the worlds of Assassin’s Creed and Dark Souls with some Ghost of Tsushima, that would make for one hell of a compelling video game, right?
Well, that’s exactly what the developers at Team Ninja set out to achieve with Rise of the Rōnin. Announced during State of Play in September 2022, this single-player action RPG is created by the same team that brought us the likes of Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Nioh and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, so you know it comes with a worthy pedigree.
Set during the Edo era of 19th century Japan, Rise of the Rōnin is said to depict: “the Boshin war between the Tokugawa Shogunate and various anti-shogunate factions displeased with the western influence after the reopening of Japan following the Sakoku period.” It will of course no doubt challenge the player's skill and resolve for even the hardened Soulsborne veterans.

However, as reported by DSOgaming (via Reddit), it seems that Rise of the Rōnin will blend elements from not only the likes of Nioh and Dark Souls but also Assassin’s Creed and Ghost of Tsushima.
Rise of the RōninI looks to borrow the side-quest formula from the recent RPG-inspired Assassin’s Creed games, as well as its skill-ree and abilities implementation. It also looks to take the challenging combat of the Soulsborne series with a theme not too dissimilar to Ghost of Tsushima. Oh, and it even has romance options. So get ready for some samurai McLovin!
What’s more, leaked screenshots that not only reveal Rise of the Rōnin’s skill tree but also its map which wouldn't look out of place from a AAA Ubisoft release. Hopefully, the map won’t be filled with the typical Ubisoft clutter, but I wonder if it is filled with towers to climb? Only time will tell.
Finally, along with the leaked screenshots was a potential release window which suggests that Rise of the Rōnin will be released for PC and PlayStation 5 sometime during early 2024. That being said, it’s always wise to take unconfirmed leaks and speculation with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise.
