The PlayStation Plus essential tier games for June have been announced, with fans disappointed at this year’s selection so far.
It’s safe to say that the essential tier games PlayStation have offered so far haven’t been a complete hit with fans. Some titles have been generally well-received, like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Battlefield 2042 and Fallout 76, but many have left a lot to be desired, especially compared to the extra tier offerings.
The critically acclaimed Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of those incredible extra tier offerings.
With June’s line-up adding to the disappointment, PlayStation Plus subscribers have been reflecting on what has been offered so far and many aren’t optimistic that future months will be any better. Reddit user Pitiful_Truth_377 created a post featuring all the free games Sony have given out over the last few months of 2023, saying, “PS Plus half year line up. Since we now know the games for June, we now reach the [halfway] checkpoint of 2023. What's y'all opinion of this half year of PS Plus monthly games?”

Many expressed disappointment with the free games. “They are deliberately making it a weaker line-up so you upgrade your subscription. It is a business tactic and intentional," one user wrote while another added, "How do you fit so much disappointment on one screen?!” Someone else commented, "IMO, it's been an awful year for essential and an awesome year for extra.” One subscriber wrote, "I would not sub to the basic one, but I feel like extra is worth it." Many agreed with that sentiment: “For me, extra makes essential pretty redundant. I’d rate this essential line-up pretty poor so far but extra is a comfortable 11/10 for me so it doesn’t matter."
Clearly, the extra and premium tiers are where the good stuff is but you’ve got to be willing to pay a bit extra per month/year to enjoy them. Many were hopeful that June would boast an impressive cluster of games, citing previous years’ selections as a good indication that something good was on the way. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
We’re only halfway through the year though, so there’s plenty of time left for subscribers to get their money’s worth for their subscription model, hopefully with some top-tier AAA games or PlayStation exclusives.
