This is unexpected. The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now outselling 2022’s Modern Warfare II on Xbox, as Call of Duty classics continue to rise up the console’s sales charts.
It’s a busy ol’ time in the Call of Duty calendar. The upcoming 2023 release has finally been unveiled and, as suspected, it’s Modern Warfare III. It’s believed that the project was originally planned to be a MWII expansion, before it was decided that there was enough content to make it its own game. Strangely, despite Microsoft’s ongoing acquisition of Activision, PlayStation users will gain early access to the game. The single-player campaign is set to take players back to Verdansk and fans are convinced that Zombies may be making a comeback as a free–to-play entity. The game is set to release on 10 November and I’m sure when it does, it’ll rocket up the sales chart. In the meantime though, 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 is dominating on Xbox.
Take a look at the trailer for Modern Warfare III below.
As reported by The Gamer, the UK sales chart (via GamesIndustry.biz) reveals that on Xbox, Modern Warfare 2 is currently occupying the fifth position. Despite being 14 years old, the CoD classic is outselling Diablo IV, Hogwarts Legacy, and 2022’s Modern Warfare II. It hasn’t quite hit the top spot though. Call of Duty: Black Ops II is sitting in fourth place, followed by Grand Theft Auto V in third, Red Dead Redemption 2 in second, and FIFA 23 in first.

Modern Warfare 2’s servers recently had to be pulled offline due to a serious hacking situation. Many favourite Call of Duty games of yesteryear have recently experienced a major resurgence in popularity on Xbox after multiplayer servers were restored. Xbox Series X consoles reportedly even began selling out after months of stable stock levels as CoD fans clambered to get in on the nostalgic action.
If you’re waiting to dive into the very latest in the world of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare III will be released on 10 November. We know there will be an early access period, but those dates remain unconfirmed.
