Steam new free RPG is so massive it’ll keep you busy for months

This Steam freebie is so long that I'd be shocked if you actually finish it

This huge, free game on Steam will probably take you thousands of hours to actually complete, which doesn’t sound bad for a game you don’t have to spend a dime on… but how far will the “free” part of the free download actually take you?

IdleOn - The Idle RPG is, as the name may imply, a free idler game from developer and publisher Lavaflame2 on Steam.

Based solely on the playtime that some of the reviewers on Steam have, you could play this game for over 2,000 hours without spending a penny and still get nowhere close to completing it. If you like bang for your buck, 2,000+ hours for free sounds like a good return on investment to me.

Now, this game isn’t technically new, as it actually came out in 2021, but the latest update for the game seems to have transformed things in a big way… but, uh, that might not be a good thing.

You see, IdleOn - The Idle RPG has a pretty good score on Steam. It’s currently sitting at a “Mostly Positive” score, with roughly 79% of the 22,000 reviews being positive.

The problem is that the review score used to be a lot better, as the recent update has soured the community’s opinion of it due to, you guessed it, its new pay-to-win mechanics.

“I'd been playing this game since before World 3 was out; the game was originally a fantastic F2P experience… but there's been a massive negative shift in terms of how the game is presented and how in-game purchases are pushed,” writes reviewer IlinxFaer.

“I then started to notice the massive cracks in how badly the game had become predatory in terms of in-game microtransactions - constant on-screen pushes for limited time gem packs with seemingly no way to close them without clicking on the shop, along with new limited time offers on premium equipment all to induce FOMO and get you to spend money.”

Oof, sounds like maybe the free part of the free-to-play is just a taster.

Still, you won’t lose any money by simply trying it for yourself… just don’t blame me if what the reviewers are saying is true.
