Developer Barking Kitten Interactive’s upcoming Northwind looks to be an exciting new addition to the roguelike deckbuilder genre.
It’s almost as if you took the gameplay of Pokémon and replaced your adorable ‘mons with Skyrim’s weird and wonderful high fantasy creatures.
“Northwind is a rogue-lite deckbuilder monster-hunting game. Hunt monsters, gather resources and explore card smelting in Northwind Town. Discover new monsters and unlock town upgrades as you increase your hazard level,” reads the synopsis.

Players will assume the role of a mercenary tasked with hunting monsters and gathering resources, all throughout the town of Northwind.
Naturally, you’re going to find yourself in more than a few battles along the way, requiring some strategic thinking if you want to become a master of the game’s deckbuilding gameplay.
Speaking of Pokémon, the newly-announced Pokémon Legends Z-A is set to launch in 2025. Take a look at the game's first trailer below.
The cards you collect will help improve your attack power, while the higher you build your mana level, the more powerful equipment you’ll be able to wield.

Card Smelting is the discovery of new cards, while Card Enhancement is how you’ll alter and upgrade your abilities. You can also try out Card Forging which allows you to duplicate cards, create a combo, or use them as smelting materials.
Whilst Northwind hasn’t yet announced a release date beyond the vague window of 2024, it does have a free demo available to sample now over on Steam.
If that’s not enough to keep you busy, you may also want to check out Venture to the Vile, an exciting upcoming 2.5D Metroidvania from ex-Grand Theft Auto and Assassin’s Creed developers which also happens to have a free demo available to play now over on Steam.
