The mystery of Red Dead Redemption 2’s Gavin may finally have been solved.

Ever since we first heard of this Red Dead Redemption 2 character, we’ve tried to figure out who Gavin really is.

We’ve had plenty of false starts where fans believed they’d finally identified the man behind the legend.

But there’s never been anything concrete.

Turns out, we’ve been coming at this mystery all wrong.

One Redditor believes Gavin’s identity has been staring us in the face, we just kept missing it.

“Nigel is Gavin,” is quite the opening from Reddit user abbiedesu; thankfully, they have more to say than that.

This theory isn’t exactly concise, so we’ll try to condense it down for you.

“In the letter it says he was called ‘strange’ pointing to the fact he was gay. The naked painting basically confirms it considering we know the artist was also a man.

“I’m assuming that Nigel was in love with Gavin and (considering we know it was not socially acceptable to be gay during this time period) that Gavin accidentally killed him during a lovers quarrel or killed him when Nigel admitted he was gay,” the OP argues.

From there, it’s suggested that, due to the guilt, Gavin assumed Nigel’s identity.

It’s not totally out of the realms of possibility, but it would be a fantastic bit of lore from Rockstar Games to put that much detail into a minor character.

As far as some fans are concerned, “The real Gavin was the friends we made along the way.”

How’s that for wholesome after the whole accidental murder theory!

Maybe Nigel isn’t Gavin, but the theory is quite compelling, all the same.

If it’s eventually proven to be true, we’ve been staring Gavin in the face and not even realised it.
