There is no denying that in many ways, the PlayStation 5 is a big step up from its PlayStation 4 predecessor. However, when it comes to themes, the PS4 is seemingly hard to beat.
We all know that the PlayStation 5 offers a substantial upgrade in every way to the PlayStation 4. With faster loading times, 4K support and features such as haptic feedback, it was quite the improvement (when we could all eventually get our hands on one).

However, when it comes to the PlayStation 5 home screen, its PlayStation 4 predecessor still has quite the upper hand with the ability to add themes. This would see users able to add dynamic images to their PS4 homescreens, such as The Last of Us Part II inspired one that would switch between day and night.

PlayStation 4 themes would regularly be added ahead of big game releases such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and more.
However, the ability to add themes to personalise your home screen was not carried over to the PlayStation 5. Instead, players will just see a pop up for whatever game they are currently hovering over and the overall home screen is pretty bland.
As a result, fans have been lamenting over the loss of dynamic themes with one player taking to Twitter to share their frustrations.
“God... I miss PS4 themes so badly,” they wrote.

One reply read: “Now we're stuck with basic backgrounds and hollow music. Man, what a big step back Sony did.”
With Sony currently busy adding new and controversial features to the PlayStation 5, it remains to be seen if themes will be carried over to the new-gen console anytime soon. Needless to say, it is something that plenty of fans are demanding.
