PlayStation fans are once again playing guess the release date for the PlayStation 6.
Only this time, they’ve received an additional piece of information to help them narrow down when the new PlayStation console will launch.
Now that PlayStation has unveiled its PS5 Pro, and largely disappointed fans over its price in the process, attention is once again focused on the next generation of hardware.

Seeing as the PS5 Pro’s specs haven’t impressed fans much, they’re hoping that the PS6 will right that wrong.
The first official teasers from Sony are encouraging, with the brand promising a beast of a console; however, we’ve been burnt before.

But the specifications of the new hardware isn’t the only detail that’s caught the attention of gamers.
VGC’s Andy Robinson shared on Twitter not only information regarding the PS6’s prioritised backwards compatibility, but also the potential launch date for the console.
Their post reads, ” Court docs previously suggested next-gen consoles won't launch before 2028.”
Such a timeframe doesn’t sound unreasonable until you consider that Sony has already declared the PS5 in its “latter stage” of its life cycle.

Assuming that’s still the case, most fans had envisioned a 2027 release date instead.
“If MS [Microsoft] drops their next gen in 2026, Sony coming 2027 don't be fooled,” said @AlbaniaUre1 in response.
There certainly is that element of Microsoft and Sony trying to be the top dog, but there always has been.
Putting aside the competitive nature of the industry for now, other gamers believe the PS6 will actually launch later than 2028.

“After 2028 most likely,” suggested @junior_beasley.
Moreover, some believe that if 2028 is the year the PS6 launches, this means that the PS5 Pro will become more of a necessity as our PS5’s start to show signs of ageing.
“Making the PS5 Pro even more essential for the next four years. That’s crazy,” remarked Ninzolow.
Here’s the thing though, we could be getting ahead of ourselves – although documents “previously suggested” a 2028 release, that doesn’t mean this is still the case.

As a result, we need to be cautious about such claims until an official source says otherwise.
