Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is undoubtedly one of the year’s greatest games, boasting seven nominations as it headed into last week’s The Game Awards. Unfortunately, it didn’t come away with a single win, much to the upset of fans.
It was Baldur’s Gate 3 who took home the top accolade of the night, Game of the Year. It’s no surprise really. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom perhaps always stood less of a chance of winning simply because they’re sequels. Yes, Alan Wake II is a sequel as well, but many more years have passed since its predecessor allowing the game to show far more growth and innovation. Resident Evil 4 was fantastic, but it always felt like a race between Baldur’s Gate 3, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Alan Wake II. As I’m sure you’re well aware, GOTY isn’t the only accolade Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 missed out on.

Insomniac Games’ latest web-slinging entry was also nominated for Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Performance, Innovation in Accessibility, and Best Action/Adventure Game. It also ended up being in the running for Player’s Voice. Unfortunately, the game didn’t come home with any accolades - an injustice some Spidey fans gathered to discuss on Reddit.

User organic-pineapple-86 kicked off the conversation, writing, “Spider-Man 2 was nominated seven times and got ZERO awards,” alongside a sad Spidey meme. The post garnered over 6,000 upvotes. “I really wish Yuri Lowenthal had won,” said Spektr_007, while Ok_Purpose5200 agreed, commenting that Yuri knocked it “outta the park”. They also noted the “incredible” soundtrack.
For the most part though, fans see the situation for how it is. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a great game, but it is a fairly safe sequel. It truly has been an all-time standout year for gaming, so much so that choosing just six GOTY nominees was surely a task. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 proved a hit with fans and at the end of the day, that’s what matters most.
