After the embarrassing mess that was the closure of Concord, PlayStation has certainly turned its fortunes around this week.
It’s official. Astro Bot is now the highest-rated game of the year so far.
What’s even better is that it’s out today, so you can now hop into the little bot’s critically acclaimed new adventure.

If you’ve not yet seen, although it’s hard to avoid, Astro Bot has landed an incredible score of 94 over on Metacritic putting it in first place on 2024’s game release ranking.
It nabs the top spot from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth which holds a score of 92.
Animal Well (92), Balatro (90), Tekken 8 (90), Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (89), Lorelei and the Laser Eyes (88), Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (88), Mullet MadJack (88), and Persona 3 Reload (87) round out the top 10.
You may be there screaming at me that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree boasts a score of 95, and you’d be right to point that out.

However, Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion whereas in this instance, we’re talking about full releases.
Did you manage to nab one of the coveted Astro Bot DualSense controllers?
We scored Astro Bot a perfect 10 out of 10, writing, “To call it a ‘game of the year’ contender felt too small an appraisal. What Team Asobi have crafted is a joyful and wonderfully immersive masterpiece that builds upon the foundations established in Astro’s Playroom to create an end product that is unlike anything else I’ve ever played.”

“Within minutes, I was beaming with happiness and the smile did not leave my face once during the entire playthrough. It isn’t simply because Astro Bot is impressive and fun that it shines. It’s also a beautifully considered ode to PlayStation history that wholeheartedly reminded me just why I fell in love with gaming in the first place. I simply cannot think of a box that Astro Bot didn’t tick,” we continued.
We’re not the only ones to heap praise on the game, clearly.
God is a Geek wrote, “Astro Bot is a love letter to video games that sets a new standard in 3D platforming, with ridiculously creative stages and gorgeous visuals,” while GLHF added, “Astro Bot has set a new benchmark that all 3D platformers now have to reach, and I’ll be waiting excitedly while they try.”
TheGamer’s review read, “You tend to start writing lines in your head when compiling a review, and one that stuck with me early was to call Astro Bot 'the best platformer since Super Mario Odyssey'. Then I played a little more and started to think 'maybe it's better'.”

I’m imagining you get the idea. Astro Bot is out now on PlayStation 5.
