It seems like it’s probably only a matter a time before a full fan-made remake of Far Cry 1 is developed, following an enormous leak of its source code.
As Metro reports, in late June, a download for the 2004 FPS' engine, CryEngine v1.34, randomly appeared on the Internet Archive. This was highlighted on Twitter by modder Vinícius Medeiros, and fans have been discussing the possibilities for ports, mods and more that could be developed using it.
Take a look at our interview with Giancarlo Esposito on his role in Far Cry 6 below.
“Would be cool to see [a] Far Cry remaster mod, then it can be fully enjoyed,” tweeted @yrdenwatch. “Wicked. Someone should totes compile this for Vita and Switch, or at least see if it’s possible to run it,” wrote @TheNamesIanBro. “I want to see a 3DS port lmao,” added @peng0009.

Given that the source code hasn’t been available for that long, it remains to be seen what fans will end up producing with it. It’s not clear how this actually happened, either - much like that old Sega information leak which surfaced online recently, it’s baffling how the most intriguing things can suddenly appear years after they were relevant.
Speaking of Far Cry, it was recently claimed by a supposed anonymous insider that the next game in the series is already in the works at Ubisoft. Apparently titled Far Cry: Rise, it’s alleged that the upcoming game will be set on a remote tropical island called Kimsan, located in the Yellow Sea, which has been taken over by North Korean insurgents. Players will apparently play as a male or female Korean idol, fighting to survive and protect their sibling from the insurgency.
Many Far Cry fans are unhappy with the supposedly leaked details about Far Cry: Rise, but we’re yet to get any official information from Ubisoft to suggest that it even exists, so there’s not much to be concerned about right now.
