For many fans of the survival horror genre, Capcom’s Resident Evil series is the standout franchise alongside the likes of Silent Hill.
Inspired by the NES game Sweet Home, when the original Resident Evil was released in 1996 for the PlayStation it changed the genre forever. Capcom earned itself a new legion of devoted fans outside of its other popular series, Street Fighter.

After making their way to the seemingly abandoned Spencer Mansion, players took control of either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield. However, upon entering the mansion it soon became apparent that Alpha Team was not alone and they just wandered into a secret experiment facility run by the sinister pharmaceutical company, Umbrella.
Offering challenging gameplay, a wonderfully cheesy story, well-thought-out puzzles and more, the original Resident Evil is a true classic of not just the survival horror genre but of the video game industry as a whole. Then in 2002, this classic game was remade when the Resident Evil remake arrived for the Nintendo GameCube, arguably one of the best remakes of all time.
In recent years, Capcom has remade Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 to great success. If the company were to now follow a mainline chronological order, it’s possible that Resident Evil 5 could be the next game to receive the makeover treatment. Yet, many fans are calling for Resident Evil Code: Veronica and perhaps even the original game to be remade again.
At this time only Capcom knows what it plans next, but while we wait a group of talented survival horror fans have taken matters into their own hands by remaking the original Resident Evil powered by Unreal Engine 5 and it looks incredible.

Uploaded to the ‘RE Biohazard’ YouTube channel, the nearly four-minute gameplay trailer features moments from the original game that we know and love. Furthermore, the developers have gone the extra mile by adding in new scenes, such as the writer of the Keeper’s Diary (Itchy Tasty), and features re-designed enemies as well as some of the memorable boss encounters.
The developers will even offer the choice of classic fixed camera angles or the more up-to-date over-the-shoulder perspective. It seems that the developers hope to one day release a playable build of the remake, but it’s likely that Capcom might shut down that project before that day comes. Hopefully, I’m wrong. Either way, be sure to take a look at the impressive gameplay trailer.
If you want to try the original Resident Evil, it’s currently included in the PlayStation Plus Premium library jazzed up with HD visuals. What’s more, the 2002 remake has been remastered and is available on just about every platform imaginable. So what are you waiting for? Go and play some classic survival horror!
