Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has been selling ridiculously well, as you’d expect. With the inclusion of third-person gameplay, gorgeous visuals, and a campaign that many fans have hailed as one of the best in the series, it’s really no wonder that it's been going down well. The early release of the campaign for those who preordered also did a fantastic job of generating hype around the release - the gaming community is in a full Call of Duty frenzy.
With all that in mind, it’s totally unsurprising that Modern Warfare II has had a far better start than 2021’s Vanguard. Last year’s title had the franchise’s worst launch in over a decade, so it wasn’t going to take much to beat it, but still - according to GamesIndustry.biz, MWII is the UK’s third biggest physical game release of the year so far, right behind FIFA 23 and Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

In its first week, the game surged to the top of the UK’s boxed game charts, toppling FIFA 23 into second place after four weeks. In third place is the fantastic Bayonetta 3, which I gave a 9/10 in my review, praising it’s amazing combat and incredibly catchy music. It’s what she deserves.

Back to MWII though, and its physical UK sales are up 42% compared to Vanguard - over half of these (53%) were on the PS5, followed by 29% on Xbox and a further 18% on PS4. Despite physical sales figures being great, they’re still down 61% when compared to Modern Warfare (2019). That said, it’s really impressive that they’re as high as they are - only digital preorders got access to the campaign early, so it’s surprising that so many players decided to forgo it by buying the disc. Some people just wanna see it on their shelves, I guess.
