Modern Warfare 2 will be free to play next month, says insider

Simmer down, simmer down - that's not the whole story.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is going to go free to play during December, says notable insider Tom Henderson, in an effort to maintain the game's successes into the holiday season and hopefully in the new year.

Even if we didn't have the sales figures to back it up, Modern Warfare II got a much, much warmer welcome than Vanguard. A return to Task Force 141, sizzling visuals, magnificent fun to be had in its multiplayer and the baby girl-ification of a one Simon "Ghost" Riley. What a time to be a Call of Duty fanatic. While those who purchased Modern Warfare II would receive extras that speed up their progression in Warzone 2.0, it looks like those lobbies are going to get cramped with a free weekend that is apparently scheduled for next month.

Classic multiplayer map Rust is actually discoverable in Al Mazrah - here's where to find the iconic tower:

Covering the scoop for Insider Gaming, Henderson has heard that this weekend will start on 15 December to dovetail with the mid-season update for Modern Warfare II. This first free weekend will last until 19 December, and there could be others in the works, but imaginably these will arrive in January or even later than that. Again, as Activision hasn't announced this - in fact, it hasn't even announced a double XP weekend at the time of writing - so proceed with caution.

Additionally, there's a CODball mode waiting in the wings in order to tie in with the World Cup being hosted in Qatar. This mode would share similarities with Rocket League, but we've still not got a date attached to that for a potential release, though one would assume that this would coincide with the arrival of professional footballer Operators in the game.
