Marvel Comics just killed off the Guardians of the Galaxy in a shocking new issue.
It’s not the first major death we’ve seen from Marvel Comics this year. Several months ago, Ms. Marvel was killed off in an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man. The issue promised to be the “most shocking” published in 50 years, and the storyline drew criticism for the fact that Kamala Khan was killed off in someone else’s comic book series during AAPI Heritage Month. For many, Ms. Marvel provides a sense of much-needed representation. Thankfully, Ms. Marvel has now returned as a mutant - with a brand new series written by Ms. Marvel actor Iman Vellani. As Kamala returns though, the Guardians have met a grisly end.
Speaking of Ms. Marvel, the character returns in the MCU in the upcoming The Marvels.
As reported by Dexerto, in recent issues, the Guardians of the Galaxy have been pursuing Grootfall, a Groot-shaped meteor set on consuming planets. How did it get to this stage, I hear you ask? Groot had previously died on his homeworld, with an elder tree known as Granopy turning Groot into Grootfall as her final ‘gift’. Not a very nice gift, if you ask me. The Guardians needed to stop Grootfall but clearly, that meant killing their fallen friend for good.

Star-Lord reportedly reached out to Grootfall in order to try and reason with it but the team’s attempts failed. So, in the end, Grootfall swallowed the Guardians whole. In Guardians of the Galaxy Issue #6 by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Alex Lins, KJ Diaz, and Cory Petit, the team have been transported to an after-life realm where they’ll be forced to confront Groot’s downfall.
The big question is: Are the Guardians actually dead? Well, they’re seemingly alive in the after-life but it awaits to be seen if they can make their way back to any kind of living world. The synopsis for Issue #7 confirms that the team is dead with Hulkling and Wiccan trying to pick up the Guardians’ mantle. As was the case with Ms. Marvel though, hopefully we’ll see the original team back in action again soon.
