Brace yourselves, It’s finally happening. As in, the franchise with Pennywise, not just something vague.
Last year, it was revealed that an It prequel series is in development, which will apparently take place in the 1960s, with the director of 2017’s It and 2019’s It - Chapter Two, Andy Muschietti, returning as an executive producer. Now, as reported by the The Hollywood Reporter, HBO Max has officially ordered the series, which currently has the working title Welcome to Derry, and is being created by Warner Bros. Television.
Take a look at Bill Skarsgård’s creepy audition for the role of Pennywise the clown below.
Andy Muschietti’s sister, Barbara Muschietti, who worked as a producer on the two modern It films, will also be overseeing the series, and Chapter Two’s Jason Fuchs is involved, too.

“As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces,” the Muschiettis said. “It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humour, humanity and horror.”
“I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara,” It author Steven King said. “Red balloons all around!”
According to HBO Max’s head of original content, Sarah Aubrey, the series “will expand the It storytelling canvas and bring fans deeper into the terrifying, mesmerising town of Derry”. She said: “We are thrilled to continue this iconic franchise with the brilliant Andy and Barbara Muschietti, Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane.”
At the time of writing, we’ve not been given any indication of when we can expect the series to hit our screens, but hopefully we won’t be waiting too long for a trailer.
