House Of The Dragon might be about to off one of its central characters as they are notably nowhere to be seen in the preview for the eighth episode. Given how important Lord Corlys Velaryon is to his House and as an ally of the Blacks, this omission could have serious consequences for the oncoming political storm.
Spoilers for House Of The Dragon and Fire & Blood follow.
House Of The Dragon draws a significant amount from George R. R. Martin's prequel Fire & Blood, however, it has made diversions and divergences from the original material. One of these is the fact that, in the show, King Viserys suffers from ill health as a result of a cut from the Iron Throne, whereas in the book, the character gains a lot of weight over the course of his life which then causes his health to decline. The point is that even though readers might think they know how things will play out, the showrunners could pull the rug out from under them at any moment.
Advert
In the book, Lord Corlys Velaryon dies of old age two years after the semi-successful campaign for the Blacks to reinstate Rhaenyra (or failing that, one of Rhaenyra's children) on the Iron Throne. Yet, the trailer for the eighth episode mentions that Corlys suffered a "grave wound" while fighting in the Stepstones, with his wife Rhaenys sitting on the throne at their home of Driftmark. Take a look:
I'm a pessimist at the best of times so I'll be the first to say that it is not looking too brilliant for Corlys. Be that as it may, this might be a ruse to make us think that he is out of the picture when he is only off-screen recovering from that severe injury - after all, he passes away at the rather respectable age of 79 in the book. We'll have to wait and see.
