The hype for Hogwarts Legacy is reaching fever pitch, and while some are counting down the days until release, others are busying themselves by calculating how many students there’ll be in the school.
Not everyone is feeling the excitement - some gamers are planning to boycott the title in order to avoid supporting J.K. Rowling, who has been criticised for making harmful comments about the transgender community. She hasn’t been involved in its development, but will profit from its sales.
Take a look at the cinematic trailer for Hogwarts Legacy below.
Anyone who’s seen the Harry Potter movies (or even glanced at a trailer for Hogwarts Legacy, for that matter) will know that Hogwarts itself is absolutely enormous. You’d expect thousands of students would have to be roaming around the place to even get close to filling it, but according to one eagle-eyed Reddit user, that might not be the case.

“Not sure if this has been noticed before but if you count all the shown dorm rooms (14) and multiply by the number of beds (four) you get a maximum of 56 Hufflepuff students,” talldude8, wrote, attaching a screenshot of the Hufflepuff common room. “This implies that there are about 224 students in Hogwarts.”
“Sounds about right. There were eight first year Gryffindors in book one so 8x4x7=224. Suppose that the number of students vary each year [so] we can expect for Hogwarts to hold anywhere between 200 to 300 students at any given time,” added HopeILiveLonger. “I have noticed comments that express the lack of students walking around in some shots but the student body is pretty small in comparison to the size of Hogwarts. I attribute this to the way the movies depicted the school but it is what it is.”
Is it just me, or does that seem a bit too minuscule? Obviously, this doesn’t mean that the amount of NPCs wandering around the castle in the game will match this number, otherwise I imagine it could feel very barren.
