Both Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings offer some of the most successful series of novels there ever were, with the influence of J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories being an inspiration for millions of fans.
What’s more, both Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings as well as The Hobbit have seen great success with adaptations crossing over to TV and movies, board games, video games and so much more.

In terms of video games, this is an area in which both IPs have seen a lot of success since the early 2000s with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Granted the first The Lord of the Rings game arrived during the 80s, but many could say that its first good game never arrived until arguably 2002 with the movie tie-in, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

However, when Hogwarts Legacy was released earlier this year, a game set during the 1890s long before the likes of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, it changed the scope of video games set within the Wizarding World. As Hogwarts Legacy sales broke records during launch, this action RPG allows you to freely explore the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and its surrounding areas like never before. It just so happens to be quite a good game too.
The success of Hogwarts Legacy has made The Lord of the Rings fans somewhat envious (me included) and many are now desperate to see a game inspired by the J.R.R Tolkien novels on the same scale.
Imagine a Lord of the Rings game made with the same passion and love that was put into Hogwarts Legacy,” exclaimed Redditor gman96792.

“I hope the success of this game will raise interest among game developers toward RPG games for major IPs. So many franchises could take inspiration from Hogwarts Legacy,” replied No_Construction8090. “I would love Star Wars to do something like this, and it's actually baffling that one of the best Star Wars RPGs came out almost 20 years ago. Hopefully, Hogwarts Legacy is the start of many franchises dipping their toes into the gaming industry.”
“I was literally saying this to my girlfriend last night as we were playing Hogwarts Legacy for the first time,” said a Reddit user. “I said “I’m actually really disappointed. Not in this game, because it looks absolutely f****** amazing. But I’m disappointed because I know I’ll never be able to play a Lord of the Rings game where they put this much detail and care into the game.”
“I don't understand why The Lord of the Rings games have to be about war all the time. I would love a Hobbit farming simulator where the biggest drama is your fellow villagers being petty about something,” suggested AlpacaMaracca.
Will we ever get a The Lord of the Rings game to the scale of Hogwarts Legacy? We can live in hope and I for one will be keeping my fingers crossed.
