The Lord Of The Rings is still a highly successful franchise, but we’re yet to get a proper open-world RPG despite it arguably being the perfect fit for one.
With a new trilogy on the way I think it’s about time we fixed that, and I know for a fact others feel the same way, especially when one of the most recent games we’ve had for Lord Of The Rings was that dreadful Gollum spin-off.

Anyone who has played the PlayStation 2 games knows it’s not difficult to make a good Lord Of The Rings adaptation, and while a turn-based RPG suited the series quite well, we can go bigger, and better.

In the past fans have looked to another Warner Bros IP, Harry Potter for inspiration, specifically the critically-acclaimed Hogwarts Legacy game.
Past Reddit threads have remarked what a treat it’d be for Lord Of The Rings to get its own version of Hogwarts Legacy, like user gman96792 who said: “Exploring Middle Earth would leave me in awe."
It does sound cool, as there are so many locations you could explore across an enormous map. Fast travel could be the Eagles or you could travel on foot or horseback like they do for most of the films, either way it’d be magical.
“I hope the success of this game will raise interest among game developers toward RPG games for major IPs. So many franchises could take inspiration from HL” read one of the comments, noting the Star Wars franchise could do something similar.

Another said “I mean, MMOs are a big time investment, but Lord of the Rings Online is an absolutely faithful recreation of the world of the books.”
Perhaps when the new trilogy kicks off some games will be announced alongside it, as it’d be great to explore more of Middle-Earth through various genres.
