The DCU, formerly the DCEU, is in somewhat of a transitional phase right now. Several months ago, James Gunn and Peter Safran came onboard as the studios’ latest heads - essentially wiping the DC slate clean.
The Flash, which is out now, is one of the final projects to be released from the ‘old’ DCEU - bridging the gap between what we’ve known up to now and Gunn and Safran’s rebooted universe, with Superman: Legacy set to kick off Chapter One, known as Gods and Monsters, in July 2025. It’s not a total reboot. The Flash’s director is keen to see star Ezra Miller return for a sequel, despite the controversy that surrounds him. Many previous DC heroes have been relieved of their duties though. Ben Affleck has recently said that his time as Batman was ‘over too soon’, and we know that Henry Cavill’s Superman will not return. HIs successor has been narrowed down though.
Next up for DC is Blue Beetle which will release on 18 August, 2023.
Superman: Legacy will kickstart the new DCU, and is set to focus on a younger version of Clark Kent than seen during the Cavill tenure. Cavill did a great job with the role, as is Tyler Hoechlin on The CW’s Superman & Lois so the newest actor has big shoes to fill. As reported by our friends at UNILAD, the search for the next Clark Kent has been narrowed down with three actors now due to participate in screen tests.

Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter took to Twitter to tease that Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet and Tom Brittney are the trio left in the running. All great actors. You may know Hoult from The Great, The Menu, Renfield, or the X-Men films. Corenswet starred in Hollywood, We Own This City, Pearl, and will soon appear in Twisters too. Brittany is a lead in UK drama Grantchester.
It’s also believed that the search for Lois Lane has also been narrowed down, with three actresses in the running there. They’re believed to be Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Barbie), Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel). Personally, I’m a big fan of Hoult’s work and would love to see him nab the role. I suppose only time will tell.
