You may not have realised but it’s entirely possible that Sony’s recent State of Play narrowed down the release date of Grand Theft Auto VI.
Gearbox and 2K stopped by during the event to confirm the release date of Borderlands 4, initially revealed last year.
It’s now been confirmed that the game will be dropping onto our consoles on 23 September 2025.

But what’s this got to do with GTA VI? Well, Push Square has linked this announcement to some rather interesting comments previously made by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick.
Take-Two is, of course, the parent-company of both Rockstar and 2K.
"I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily," Zelnick said previously, as per Push Square.
It’s a brief comment but one that could provide insight into Take-Two’s upcoming release schedule.

Take a look at Borderlands 4 below.
You see, Take-Two has already said that 2K’s Mafia: The Old Country will release this coming summer which will assumedly see it land between June and August.
Borderlands 4 is now confirmed for September.

GTA VI remains with its window of fall 2025 which stretches from September to November.
If Borderlands 4 is already occupying September, and Mafia: The Old Country the months before that, it’s perhaps sensical to assume that GTA VI is more likely to land towards the end of its window.
Zelnick said the company wouldn’t want to “unnecessarily” stack games, and a November release would give Borderlands 4 two months breathing room, especially as it’s releasing fairly late in September.
I imagine, with this reasoning in mind, we’ll see Mafia: The Old Country occupy a slot in early summer.

Of course, this is all speculation but it’s speculation backed by some evidence-based reasoning.
We’re going to have to continue to sit tight for confirmation though.
