It was never really in doubt, but we now know that Grand Theft Auto VI is officially on the way. If you’ve been reading the news, you’ll know that GTA VI has had an unconventional reveal to say the least. Rockstar Games was recently subject to a cyber attack during which over an hour of GTA VI development footage was stolen. A UK-based teenager has reportedly pleaded not guilty in response to the allegations. It was clearly a project Rockstar wanted to keep on the down-low for now, but new evidence has come to light about the game’s development journey.
Speaking of GTA, take a look at this incredible mod that lets you play as The Boys’ Homelander in GTA V.
As reported by ComicBook, Rockstar Games insider Tez2 has revealed that GTA VI has been in full development since before the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 which was released back in 2018. According to Tez2, the game’s lengthy development is down to the fact that the GTA VI’s concept has been rebooted several times.

Developers were concerned about the scale of the game and the animation technology. COVID-19 then further delayed development. According to ComicBook, Rockstar Games patented new NPC behaviour technology back in 2020 which is thought to be related to GTA VI.
The truth is, GTA VI is likely years away from release. One leaker suggested that the game could land in 2025 and that seems like a sensible guess for now. In the meantime, some fans are using development footage to map GTA VI’s version of Vice City. I’d expect that map to hit the forums soon knowing the speed of GTA fans.
