GTA 6 Online teased to be released as a standalone game

Head online without needing the base game

As excited as we are for Grand Theft Auto VI and a brand-new campaign, the arrival of the highly-anticipated Rockstar title will also mark the start of a new online experience.

Released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V was, of course, an incredible game in its own right but it was its Grand Theft Auto Online component that has kept the game alive over a decade later.

Thanks to its ever-popular roleplaying community, GTA Online is still played by millions across the world but with the arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI, those players will be migrating to the brand-new online mode.

Whereas switching to GTA Online could be done via the Grand Theft Auto V’s in-game menu, a recent insider report has revealed that it will not be the same for the upcoming entry.

We already know that GTA VI Online will be “incredibly ambitious” so this is perhaps why it could be released as a standalone game.

According to Rockstar insider Tez2, Rockstar Games is planning to launch GTA VI Online as a standalone title, meaning that you do not have to own Grand Theft Auto VI to be able to play it.

Not only that but the standalone version will supposedly be available alongside the launch of the base game with players being offered a “complete package” which includes both GTA VI and GTA VI Online.

This could see GTA VI Online cost around $40 as a standalone title which will be useful for players who are only interested in this mode rather than the single player game.

Here is everything Tez2 had to say: “Rockstar/[Take-Two Interactive] already sells GTAO & RDO separately, but VI will be the first game where online is sold separately at launch, while story mode will be part of the full package that covers both."

"They will have to factor the online standalone price into the total cost. What portion of the base price will be the online's price? And what would be the story mode upgrade price for those who've bought the online standalone? T2 could benefit by pricing the online standalone lower, making it accessible for those who can't afford the $70 or $80 price."

They continued, "Eventually, those players will upgrade to access the story mode, so that's a win-win for them. This also opens an opportunity, some players may be eager to access the story mode but can't afford the upgrade price too. That's when they could slide in GTA+, and offer Game Pass-like access. They'll net extra profits from players who keep subscribing instead of saving for the upgrade. Another win-win for T2.”

Of course, this news should be taken with a pinch of salt but there is no doubt that it would make sense for Rockstar and its ever-loyal fanbase.
