The Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most popular in the video game industry of all time and excitement is through the roof with the upcoming GTA VI.
Earlier this week, Rockstar Games finally revealed the first official trailer for GTA VI and its reveal has taken social media by storm. During the first several hours of its YouTube upload, it had completely smashed a record once held by MrBeast. Two days later, that debut GTA VI trailer currently sits at a whopping 118 million views.

It’s fair to say that when the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series releases, it’s going to smash even more records across the globe. Sadly, however, some fear that they might not be able to play GTA VI, and we’re not just talking about those who will still be playing on last-gen consoles.

Whatever the reasons may be, typically related to violence and sexualised themes, some video games can get heavily censored in some countries or worse, outright banned. To this day, I’ve still not forgiven Germany for censoring a Randy Marsh alien scene in South Park: The Stick of Truth in 2014. Because Germany censored this scene and is part of the EU, all other countries in the EU had the same section censored. Thankfully, however, there was at least the option to import from the US.
Some of the most infamously banned games in some countries include Manhunt, Mortal Kombat and Dead Rising 2 to name a few. What’s more, some Arab countries have an extended list of banned games, and one prominent banned series is the aforementioned Grand Theft Auto.
For this reason, some fear that GTA VI will also be banned in some Arab countries as highlighted by the Twitter account Celebs Arabic. “GTA VI will contain many 18+ scenes and may be banned in Arab countries!” it tweeted. Some GTA fans who commented on the thread claimed that they would be willing to travel abroad to play the game. Other countries across Asia are also prone to banning games due to sexual themes, so we wouldn't be surprise if GTA VI is unplayable elsewhere too.

I would say that if Grand Theft Auto VI were to be banned in some countries, hopefully, while not ideal, much like South Park: The Stick of Truth, it could at least be censored. That being said, if GTA VI were to be censored, so much of the game would probably be cut, there wouldn't be much of it left over.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released in 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. At this time, a PC release hasn't been announced.
