I’m sure there are more than a few PlayStation fans reading this who were somewhat underwhelmed with this week’s PlayStation Showcase. Don’t get me wrong, there were some great titles included. It’s just that for a PlayStation event, there were very few updates on first-party releases.
As expected, we got an in-depth look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gameplay which, in my opinion, was the biggest win of the night. That symbiote suit sure seems to be causing some issues for Peter. Outside of that though, we’re pretty in the dark when it comes to the first-party release slate. We know that a TLOU multiplayer project is in the works, and Wolverine is on the way from Insomniac following Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. However, we have no idea what Santa Monica Studio, Bend Studio, or Sucker Punch Studios are up to … officially anyway. Insiders claim that Sucker Punch are in fact close to unveiling Ghost of Tsushima 2.
Ghost of Tsushima is one of the best-looking games out there.
Back in February, a brand new PS5 advert was released to celebrate the end of the console shortages. In it, Sony showcased some of their upcoming PS5 exclusive games. You can understand why fans were baffled then when the advert appeared to feature Ghost of Tsushima 2 footage despite the fact that a sequel has not been announced. Understandably, we assumed it would be showcased this week but that didn’t happen.

According to one insider though, the game could be ‘pretty much ready’ so I suppose we turn our attention to Summer Game Fest which is due to take place on 8 June. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson wrote, “It’s understood that a lot of the games we’re waiting on seeing are pretty much ready, so I’m not sure why Sony decided to wait this time around." Henderson has also claimed to have seen finished trailers that weren’t included in Wednesday’s showcase.
We do know that Sony is trying to announce games closer to release to cut down on crunch for devs and delays for players. Last year’s The Last of Us Part I was announced in June for an early September release. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is reportedly due out in September according to insiders, but that still doesn’t have a release date so Ghost 2 could be following the same pattern.
From a marketing standpoint, I’m imagining that SGF draws in more viewers than a PS Showcase seeing as it features reveals for all consoles. It stands to reason then that Sony may want to save their most surprising and coolest reveals for such an event, whereas we all basically knew Spider-Man 2 footage was coming. Let’s cross our fingers that that’s the case.
