The Battlefield series was once the king of the military shooter. That is until a certain Call of Duty began to gain ground and establish itself as the de facto of the genre.
Much like its rival series, Battlefield dabbled in various historical settings in order to keep the franchise feeling fresh but that’s been thrown out the window for Battlefield 7.
The latest Call of Duty will launch this November which has become a kind of gaming tradition
In an exclusive interview with IGN, Vince Zampella revealed that the next installment of the Battlefield franchise would take place in a modern-day setting.

Alongside this, a piece of concept art was shared which shows a small town in the midst of war, with trailing missiles sweeping down from the sky.
It’s unclear where this town is situated, however, some speculate that it’s in Western Europe, perhaps near France.
It’s pointed out that as part of the concept art, we can see a wildfire spreading throughout the countryside surrounding the unnamed town, which could mean environmental disasters are part and parcel of combat.
Of course, setting the game in the modern day means it will have to dance around the political unrest of the real world, but it also means players can take advantage of modern weaponry within the gameplay.

Zampella noted in the interview that, “if you look back to [...] the pinnacle of Battlefield, it's that Battlefield 3... Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well.”
This comes after the previous entry for the series, Battlefield 2042, was received with a mixed reception.
While the team has corrected the course of the title, it still pales in comparison to Call of Duty, and it’s clear that EA and Zampella want to see Battlefield back on top of the genre.
