'Battlefield 2042' Content Pulled By DICE In Wake Of Russia's Ukraine Invasion

The weekly rewards will be suspended this week in 'Battlefield 2042', as it was a skin to make a Russian attack helicopter smile.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has shook the world and it's only natural that as one of the largest industries, video games are getting involved. Some people both purposely, and by accident, have been spreading images and footage from video games as if it were real video of the ongoing conflict.

Despite some misinformation originating from games, many companies are also showing their support for Ukraine. Some are donating to Ukrainian charities, some are donating profits from sales of their games, and others are removing positive representations of Russia from their games.

One such company is DICE, developers of Battlefield 2042. As spotted by Polygon, the official Battlefield 2042 Twitter account announced that weekly mission rewards would be suspended this week. The reward for the week was a skin for the Mi-240 Super Hind Russian attack helicopter called the Grin Reaper, which made the helicopter bear a wide toothy smile.

However, 48 hours after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, DICE removed the skin from the game. Those who have already completed the weekly mission will still maintain their skin, but no more will be distributed going forward. Weekly rewards will return next week.

This is not the first time that Battlefield 2042 has faced criticism and subsequently changed in game items. A Santa Claus themed skin was removed from the game after players thought it was insensitive to link the festivities with war and killing.

Tensions between Ukraine and Russia have been long standing, and in 2014 Putin sent unmarked armed forces in an attempt to annex Crimea. These forces were called the 'little green men' and in November DICE named a skin Little Green Man after the incident. DICE claimed it was not aware of the negative connotations and changed the name following backlash.
