There’s a little bit of something for everyone in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Traditionally, it’s the stealth-entries that have always been viewed as quintessential Assassin’s Creed, with the more recent RPG entries oftentimes written-off as the black sheep of the franchise.
It turns out though, you shouldn’t underestimate the popularity of the RPG entries - particularly with the way Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is shaping up. Expected to arrive this year, Codename Red is said to be the final RPG instalment in the franchise. Taking players to Feudal Japan, the dual-protagonist game is rumoured to feature a male samurai and a female shinobi. Hopefully, it’s something we’ll learn more about in the coming months. In the meantime, fans have hailed Assassin’s Creed Odyssey as the best of the RPG trilogy - and it is a banger.
Take a look at the teaser trailer for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Codename Red below.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey scored a very respectable 83 on Metacritic back when it was released and I have to say, it’s one of my personal favourites in the franchise. Boasting incredible characters, an entertaining story, and a detailed open world, it’s oh so very easy to lose many, many hours to Odyssey. This is something Reddit user shaan1232 has just discovered.

“Odyssey is the best game of the RPG trilogy,” they began. “I can't believe I waited so long to play it. [...] I decided to try out Odyssey since I just felt sick of playing Valhalla and HOLY. The combat feels as smooth as Origins but improved. [...] The missions are interesting, and frankly I liked the story as much as I liked Origins, no complaints from me there. The naval combat felt MUCH better than in Origins, where I just wanted to get out of them as soon as possible. The world is much more interesting to me, and the world is definitely NOT empty, there's so much to do everywhere.”
They continued, “Even the side missions are interesting. [...] Also the Mercenary mechanic makes the game always interesting, there's always some hard to kill enemies nearby no matter what level you are.” Plenty of other players agreed. “Odyssey is also my recent favourite! It makes me sad how much people don't like it. I loved the balance between fighting, sneaking, and story,” said sanmarialors while raecino added, “Yeah I never understood the hate Odyssey got, it’s a great game.”
It’s a shame that Valhalla took on too much RPG bloat. I’m hoping that Codename Red is far more refined. If the game is a major success, Ubisoft may want to rethink making it the final RPG entry. It’s so close to perfecting its RPG formula.
