Running out of space on your PS5 could soon be a thing of the past.

It seems every game has a massive file size nowadays, with the PS5’s standard terabyte of storage quickly getting vacuumed up by just a few space-greedy games.

Rather than agonising over how to squeeze the most use out of your limited storage, or regularly having to re-install games that had to be bumped for the latest blockbuster, you could upgrade your console’s storage. Right now that’s cheaper than you might think, with this officially-licensed 2TB WD Black SSD available for £149.99 down from £214.02 on Amazon.

Along with your existing SSD, this will triple your available storage once it’s inserted into the expansion space. You could also opt for th 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB versions, ranging from £106.99 to £599.99.

Unfortunately a regular USB hard drive won’t do the trick for PS5 games, as these are designed to load quickly from a solid-state drive (SSD) rather than a disc-based hard drive. You can, however, use a USB hard drive to store and run your PS4 games on your PS5, so that’s another space-saving option. You can pick up one of those at a discount too, with this 2TB Seagate Game Drive marked down to £62.99 on Amazon.

The WD Black SSDs have a solid reputation with Amazon customers, with a 4.7 out of 5 rating averaged from almost 3,000 reviews. “It is a perfect match for expanding the PlayStation 5's storage capacity,” said one five-star review of the 2TB version. “Installation was straightforward and quick, taking less than five minutes to slot seamlessly into the PS5’s designated expansion bay. This bespoke fit underscores the SSD’s design, which, although gamer-themed, remains hidden once installed.”

“Simple to install, only took a few minutes,” said another review. “Plenty of YouTube tutorials out there for non techy guys like me. This has transformed my PS5. I can now fit in a large library of games for easy access. No more uninstalling and reinstalling. It really has transformed my PS5 experience.”

Another added: “A very much needed upgrade for my PS5... This was on offer so I took the plunge and it’s well worth it. No more deleting games to just to make room on the standard hard drive. Literally took 5 minutes to install.”

Some have had difficulty with the install process, however. “I followed all installation instructions to the letter and when I turned on my PS5 it didn’t have me finish the process - it doesn’t recognize that I installed it,” said one disappointed customer. “I’ve tried opening the PS5 back up and tinkering with it to see if I could get it to recognize but it’s not. There’s no support for this product because the installation is so easy so there’s no one for me to call.”

Another customer griped: “Since installation every time I power on my PS5 I get an error code that says ‘rebuilding database’!”

If you’re keen to see alternatives, check out this PS5-compatible 4TB Samsung SSD for £224.99 right now from Currys. Alternative USB hard drive options include this 6TB option at Robert Dyas for £145.99, but again this will only work properly for PS4 games on your PS5.

So at just £149.99, the 2TB WD Black SSD is an easy recommendation thanks to its official licensing and positive customer feedback.
