To say that excitement for The Witcher 4 is high would be an understatement but at this time, developers CD Projekt RED has provided very few details about the upcoming sequel.
CDPR announced that The Witcher 4 was in development in March 2022 with global community manager for the studio, Marcin Momot tweeting “The next instalment in The Witcher series of video games is in development!”. The Witcher 4 will be moving away from its in-house REDengine3, which powered The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in favour of Unreal Engine 5.

At this time, The Witcher 4 doesn't have an official name but CDPR has given it the codename Polaris for the time being. Some have speculated that in The Witcher 4, Geralt of Rivia will not be the main protagonist but instead, his loyal friend, Ciri will be the new leading character.

That being said, during an interview with the Italian website Lega Nerd (translated by Wccftech), current series game director Sebastian Kalemba hinted at the return of Geralt of Rivia. “I believe I can say it'll be an excellent entry point for many players, without forgetting the long-time fans who still wish to follow Geralt's adventures,” said Kalemba when on the topic of The Witcher 4.
“The Witcher 4 won't be out for some years, and it'll [have been] a long time since the previous one, so we cannot just target the audience already fond of the saga. We must also build a new community.”
While those details were vague, it’s interesting that Geralt of Rivia was mentioned. Whether the popular character will be playable, an NPC or included in flashbacks in The Witcher 4 remains to be seen but it’s nice that he’s seemingly been confirmed to play some sort of role in the sequel.
No release date has been announced for The Witcher 4 at the time of writing, but we’d be very lucky if it was to launch in the next couple of years. We know that CDPR understandably likes to take its time developing games, and we’re sure that The Witcher 4 will be no exception.
