Urgh, Tim Sweeney is wanging on about the ‘metaverse’ again. Apparently, it’s the future of Unreal Engine 6, and while the capabilities for developers sound great, I do wish this concept would die.
Essentially, Sweeney sees the next iteration of Unreal Engine as a combination of the tools already being used, plus Fortnite’s ‘easy-to-use’ Unreal editor.

Sweeney believes it will still take a fair few years to reach this point, but his visions is to see the two aspects converge to create a ‘metaverse’ of sorts.

“The real power will come when we bring these two worlds together so we have the entire power of our high-end game engine merged with the ease of use that we put together in [Unreal Editor for Fortnite],”
There’s a lot of interconnectivity available for Epic Games especially with their endless partnerships which includes Disney.
Epic is aiming to create a seamless and ‘persistent universe’ that fully interoperates with Fortnite to create a ‘metaverse’ product.
Honestly, this all sounds like big ambitions and pie-in-the-sky thinking. It also sounds enthusiastic to discuss your ideas, but will Epic deliver on this?

Thank God developers will still be able to use Unreal Engine 6 as a traditional game engine and ignore all the ‘metaverse’ nonsense.
Don’t get me wrong, what Epic Games has done to further development, especially with the new Fortnite tools that allows anyone to start creating without the need for coding knowledge.
With Unreal Engine 6, there are plans for Epic to create game assets and design for universality, meaning that objects can be used across a number of games including Roblox and Minecraft.
This will all go to helping create more games, but I think the ‘metaverse’ ship has sailed, sunk, and been forgotten. The amount of gamers who would care is so minuscule that companies need to forget the concept.
