The cogs are beginning to swing for the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us live-action adaptation with an actor who has just been cast for another key character.
When The Last of Us season one premiered in January 2023, it proved that live-action adaptations inspired by popular video game franchises can work if treated with the respect it deserves. By winning top gongs at prestigious award ceremonies such as the Emmys and achieving a score of 96% on aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, a second season being commissioned was as likely as Ellie going on a potty-mouthed rant.

Understandably hype for the second season is reaching fever pitch and if we get episodes like ‘Long, Long Time’ which was recently labelled as a triumph, fans of The Last of Us will be in for a treat. What’s more, following months of speculation, the role of Abby was cast with actress Kaitlyn Dever taking the coveted role. Anyone who has watched the likes of Unbelievable, Dopesick and No One Will Save You will know that Dever will knock this role out of the park.

Without giving spoilers away, Abby plays a huge role in The Last of Us Part II by not only being a pivotal role in its story but is also the second playable character alongside the returning Ellie. Now, another leading role with Young Mazino has been cast as the likeable Jesse.

If there’s an actor that looks just like the character they are playing, this would be a prime example. Before the season two casting, Mazino is perhaps best known for playing the role of Paul Cho in the mini-series Beef. However, being cast as Jesse in The Last of Us could be the actor's biggest role yet.
At this time, a release date hasn't been announced for the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us but it is currently scheduled to premiere in 2025 with filming beginning next month in February.
