We’re not angry, we’re just disappointed. Deeply disappointed.
Back when The Blair Witch Project was released in 1999, horror fans were hooked. They wanted, no, needed, to know more about this story.
That’s after we realised that the footage shown wasn’t real. It might sound silly now, but you had to be there to understand just how hyped the film was.

One piece of the film’s lore that never fails to lure us in is who the witch is.
Many theories have floated around the internet since the late 90s; some are ridiculously far-fetched, while others perfectly align with the narrative that plays out in the film.
Before we dive into this particular theory, we think it best you ignore the sequels that have since been released.

Towards the beginning of The Blair Witch Project, the documentary crew visit an old woman who lives by the cursed woods.
This lonely and somewhat unnerving woman speaks of all sorts of creepy goings-on; she sets a chilling scene, though one the team highly doubts.
Heather in particular – you know, the woman whose snot became semi-famous –remarks on how eager this woman is to perpetuate the witch myth.
Well, Redditor Master2pint believes this kooky old woman is actually the infamous witch.

“I think that the crazy shut in woman who claimed to have seen the witch as a child was in fact the witch all along,” they argued.
“When hearing about how these kids are investigating the legend, she decides to use them as a way to finally get her recognition, something she does by stalking, terrorising, and murdering them in the woods.”
Was she right in front of us this whole time?
Fellow film fan thevilla23 is convinced, “Wow. 13 years later and this actually seems obvious when you rewatch that interview.”

“Also, the gate going to her trailer is constructed exactly like the stick men in the trees,” pointed out another.
There are several compelling links.
That said, it doesn’t quite explain why Mike is seemingly so transfixed and in a trance-like state at the end of the film.
If this old lady is the witch, there still seems to be a supernatural element at play.

Whether she’s the villain of the piece or not, that old lady is seemingly the key.
