Have you spent time, however little of it, wondering why Spider-Man has never appeared in any of Sony’s spinoff attempts?
Granted, it’s not something you’ll think about often, but every now and again when another Sony movie fails, we can’t help but ponder this odd decision.
With Kraven the Hunter reminding everyone except Sony why spinoffs should be left alone, we’re back to wondering about Spidey’s absence.

Apparently, there is a reason for it, and not just because our friendly hero thinks all the spinoffs are poor.

Spider-Man hasn’t appeared because executives assumed that audiences wouldn’t want to see the character in a non-MCU film.

Insiders have remarked on Sony’s ignorance being the “fatal flaw” that’s led to its undoing.
Jeff Bock, an Exhibitor Relations analyst, told Variety, “Unfortunately for Sony, they had a taste of success with Venom, and that kind of spoiled everything for them, because they thought they could just spin off all of these characters.”
Bock added, “I don’t think they realised that Venom could carry a franchise, whereas these other characters could not. To not have Spider-Man in these films was the fatal flaw.”
It’s important to make sure the success of the Venom trilogy isn’t overestimated, for while it’s not been as heavily criticised as Madame Web or Morbius, it’s not been highly praised either.

As also revealed by Variety, Sony could have used Spider-Man in Morbius, but it chose not to for the reason we mentioned earlier.
You’d think all these misses would translate into the end of spinoffs, but it seems Sony hasn’t got that memo.
Spider-Man fans are having to brace themselves as more reboots are set to begin.
And just when we thought Sony had finally learnt its lesson.
