It appears that Wolverine will be making another appearance in the MCU over the coming years, but it’s perhaps not the Wolverine you expect.

According to a rumour from The Cosmic Circus, It is Daphne Keen who will be returning as X-23.

Deadpool and Wolverine brought back X-23 and a whole host of other cameos

Of course, Keen’s character appeared in Deadpool and Wolverine as X-23 from Logan and she has a somewhat happy ending.

The rumour states simply that X-23 will "be back for the Avengers films.”

This means she could end up being a major role in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, perhaps even establishing the X-Men in some way, or taking a spot on the Avengers team.

Keen has said she’s interested in exploring the character further and with Hugh Jackman seemingly stepping back from the role of Wolverine, again, it makes sense to focus on X-23.

In a recent interview, Keen said, we’ve “only scratched the surface with her since she's such a complex character. She's so cool, just from a fan's standpoint.”

X-23 is indeed a complex character, more so since the Logan film where Wolverine died defending her.

Their relationship is a close one and she is now much more comfortable with her role in the world, though it’s going to be a fractious place with the advent of mutant powers emerging in the MCU.

Where Keen takes this role is down to Kevin Feige and his long-term plan for the films, but using her as s touchstone for fans is a smart idea because her character is such a badass.

We’ll have a long wait to see her back in action as the first of the Avengers films isn’t due for a couple of years.

The bigger question is what her appearance means for the future of the X-Men. Is she our permanent Wolverine? Will she accept that moniker?
