In the Harry Potter movies, Dobby became something of a Marmite character with some fans loving him whilst the others hated the little gremlin.
However, with the HBO Harry Potter reboot expected to begin filming this summer, it shouldn’t be long before we see which actor will be lending their voice to the sock-loving house-elf.
Go back to where it all began with the trailer for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone below!
Voiced by Toby Jones across the majority of the Harry Potter movies, Dobby had a distinctive tone to say the least and fans recently took to r/HarryPotteronHBO to share their thoughts on it.

“I hope they don’t copy Dobby’s voice from the movies,” they shared.
“Dobby's voice was, tbh, a little bit grating which was perfectly fine in the movies but in the show I imagine he will be getting much more screen time and at that point it would be too much.
I personally never imagined Dobby's voice like how it was in the movies and I just hope they don't copy the films..”
First introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets before meeting his heartbreaking end in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One, Dobby was a key part of the story so it will be no easy feat to find the right actor for him.

However, the replies in the Reddit thread may just have found the perfect replacement for Jones.
“C’mon Andy Serkis, I don’t care how Dobby sounds as long as he’s played by Andy Serkis,” user Spectre-Ad6049 suggested.
Serkis, who is of course most known for his portrayal of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings franchise, is definitely no stranger to weird little creatures and so taking on the role of Dobby would be an easy feat for the established actor.
Another user agreed, saying, “I’ve recently been getting into Lord of the Rings, and Andy Serkis is absolutely brilliant and deserved an Oscar.”

As it stands, no actor has yet been tied to the HBO Harry Potter reboot despite John Lithgow accidentally claiming that he had accepted the role of Dumbledore.
Hopefully we will receive an official cast list over the upcoming months ahead of the show’s 2026 release.
