DCU boss confirms surprise Superman recast

Oh the drama

With the brand-new Superman movie set to hit cinemas next month, it seems as though the journey to get there was a lot tougher than we first thought.

Heading to cinemas on 11 July 2025, Superman by director James Gunn will be the first time that we see David Corenswet take on the role of Clark Kent and his alter ego Superman.

Over the years, Superman has been played by a variety of different actors including Christopher Reeve and even Nicholas Cage but in more recent years, the role has belonged to Henry Cavill who played the caped superhero in Man of Steel and Justice League to name a few.

However, when Cavill was unceremoniously fired from his role as Superman after refusing to make a cameo in 2019’s Shazam!, a series of further events led to Gunn recasting the role for the upcoming Superman movie.

As for Gunn, the director was fired by Disney back in 2018 after a series of offensive Tweets surfaced online.

However, after hefty criticism, Warner Bros. brought him on board for 2021’s The Suicide Squad and he would eventually return to Marvel for the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

Ultimately, Gunn would go on to become DC Studios co-CEO and Warner Bros. offered him the chance to make a Superman movie before The Suicide Squad.

“Warner Bros. initially offered Gunn Superman prior to directing 2021's The Suicide Squad, back in the previous era of DC storytelling,” an article by Entertainment Weekly reads.

“Even then, before plans were firmly in place, the studio wanted a new actor to play Superman after Cavill, 'so it was even more messy than it is now,' Gunn says. But more importantly, he adds, 'I didn't have that special idea of what that [film] would be.'”

Despite Cavill being rumoured to return as Superman for The Flash and a potential Man of Steel 2, this would never come to be as Gunn recast the role and handed it to Corenswet.

Which brings us to today.

Cavill has expressed disappointment for the way things were handled but it seems as though Hollywood is doing what Hollywood does best and sweeping it under the carpet.
