The Callisto Protocol might be the most brutal game of the year, pitting one man against infected monstrosities made super fast, super strong, and super gross by an alien virus. In the lead up to launch, the game just got a live-action trailer starring Josh Duhamel and one thing is for sure - this game is not sparing any sensibilities with its level of gore.
Striking Distance Studios has gone all out in its dedication to the disgusting, studying real life examples of nauseating bodily injuries, which has actually led to some ill effects in other teams. As well as these, Silent Hill and Resident Evil were sources of inspiration and movies like The Thing and Event Horizon were key to achieving this nerve-shredding atmosphere on Black Iron Prison. Words can only go so far to describe the visuals, but if you still think you're made of steely stuff, the severity of the gore has caused the game to be banned in Japan.
Will was lucky enough to go hands-on with The Callisto Protocol in October - here's our survival guide to the game:
The story follows Jacob, a prisoner in Black Iron who is released from his holdings when the facility becomes overrun by an alien virus corrupting the flesh of his cellmates and wardens alike. When I saw The Callisto Protocol at gamescom earlier this year, I noticed that one enemy had their skull shot off, and then looking closer, I saw snapping teeth where the top of the spinal column should have been. Clearly, this will be a spectacle in more ways than one, and this trailer blurs that distinction between highly detailed visuals and real life. Check it out:
Gnarly. Joining Duhamel amongst the game's cast are Karen Fukuhara and Sam Witwer, who play the leader of a resistance group and the captain of the prison guard respectively. The Callisto Protocol comes to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC on Steam and Epic on 2 December.
