During the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, we got an extended look at Starfield’s gameplay, combat, incredible alien life, and its story.
While Starfield is said to be “Skyrim in space”, it is no longer twinning with the other title’s launch date, as Bethesda sadly announced that Starfield won’t be out this year after all. “The teams at Arkane Austin (Redfall) and Bethesda Game Studios (Starfield) have incredible ambitions for their games, and we want to ensure you receive the best, most polished versions of them,” explained the publisher. Ergo, what we’ve seen this evening of the upcoming sci-fi exploration title isn’t exactly what it will look like later on down the line, but it’s safe to say that we’re loving the show.

Todd Howard has always had his heart set on a game of this sort so it’s clear to see that Bethesda Game Studios is letting its hair down for the weird and wonderful. This section of the game is from the early chapters in the story, set on the moon of Kreet, of the planet Anselon. Can I just say how much I love these chunky ships? Interestingly, there appears to be an option to attack or leave the skittering wildlife of the moon alone.

As the player is exploring Kreet, their robot companion informs them that the pirates of the Crimson Fleet have taken over the research facility. This is sounding very like bandits taking over the abandoned labs and/or hospitals of the pre-war days. There’s even “digipicks” — that’s what the future of breaking and entering has for us. However, the art style is something to behold, mixing retro influences with a slight grub and grime that one would acquire when digging about in the space-muck.
Starfield is scheduled to be released for PC, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in early 2023.
