Across the world, no matter who we are or where we're from, mental health can impact us in a variety of different ways.
Each to our own, we all have our own coping mechanisms tailored to our needs in the hope of getting us through our bleakest of moments. It might be a trip to the cinema, going for a calming walk, reading a book, watching a movie, listening to music and arguably most importantly, talking to someone.

Many of us also turn to video games to help improve our mental health whether it be a momentary distraction or being totally immersed into a digital world we love. I am a believer in the positive impact that video games can have on our mental health, which is why I am a proud ambassador of Safe in Our World, a charity organisation that shares the same philosophy.

This brings me to today’s story shared by a Reddit user. “As sad and pathetic as this may sound, Starfield is one of the reasons I keep going,” they said, opening up the discussion on the thread.

Firstly, it’s not sad and pathetic, no doubt millions of us feel the same way and I personally think it’s amazing that this Reddit user is so open in a forum that can have its toxic moments. Thankfully, this Reddit thread showcased the good of humanity sharing stories as well as love and support for the down, but not out Starfield fan.
“Depression is no joke, and you don't have to label it sad or pathetic or anything. Gaming has saved me (and many others) on more than one occasion,” replied Pseudonymous001. “The Mass Effect trilogy did it for me,” shared semper299. “The crew of the Normandy were friends when sometimes I didn't have any. Gaming is an escape for me, a connection to friends and something to nerd out over with my wife.”
“I've been there. Sometimes it's all about finding the little things that push you forward. I hope it's everything you want it to be,” said LCJonSnow.
“Not sad, and not pathetic at all. Just embrace the fact that there is a thing like Starfield that sparks something in you and to look forward to after having such a hard time,” added NODU11. “Be kind to yourself and be grateful for any kind of happiness in your life. I hope you will love playing the game. Take care of yourself and your health.”

There are plenty more comments of support in the thread, honestly, it’s incredibly heartwarming. From my own experience, prior to meeting my wife, I firmly believe that I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for video games, allowing my countless moments to escape from what can be a really sh**ty world.
Sometimes it might feel that we have no one to talk to, but as the Reddit thread in this story shows, people can surprise you and sometimes it can be a total stranger that has your back.
If you need any help, support or information on your mental health or for someone you love, please check out the aforementioned Safe in Our World as well as other charity organisations such as Mind, Young Minds and Rethink Mental Illness to name a few.
Never feel you’re worth less, especially when it comes to methods that help you cope. You’re all awesome, remember that. Now, get gaming!
