Over the horizon, there’s a new fantasy RPG that could very well become your next favourite game. We’ve only seen a very brief trailer along with some screenshots and it’s looking like this one will take over our lives when it releases in February 2025.
Dragonkin: The Banished appears to be mashing up lots of brilliant fantasy tropes and wearing its inspirations on its sleeve. There’s a little bit of Baldur’s Gate 3 in there and a lot of Skyrim too. I already wish we could see more, but as the release date is so distant, we may get a glimpse this summer and hopefully it lives up to its potential.
There are definitely shades of Baldur's Gate 3 in Dragonkin: The Banished
Dragonkin: The Banished takes place in a world “ravaged by dragons” and can be played solo or as a four-player squad. You’ll have to “fight hordes of enemies, adapt your build with the unique Ancestral Grid system, and improve your city.” So, we’ve got several classes we can choose from, all of which are proper fantasy tropes - Barbarian, Witch, Knight, and Archer - there’s definitely something for everyone.
Advert
I love the sound of the city-building feature which apparently changes depending on decisions and discoveries you make throughout the journey. I’m a sucker for developing a city or village and it’s interesting that your friends can also help change your city by unlocking new content while you play together.
There’s going to be a lot of theory-crafting when it comes to constructing a character build as players “Select from the abilities available and try out multiple combinations to optimize your hero.” I can already imagine the kinds of characters we’ll see online when people start putting abilities together to knock out tough bosses.
Dragonkin: The Banished can’t get here soon enough and it will surely steal away many hours of our lives when it arrives in 2025.
