There’s no doubt that the Resident Evil series isn't one of the most iconic in all of the video game industry and not just the survival horror genre.
Since its inception in 1996 on the original PlayStation before making its way to other platforms, the Resident Evil series has arguably gone from strength to strength to this very day, however, there have been a few hiccups along the winding road. It’s fair to say that when Resident Evil 6 arrived in 2012, the series had lost its way.

Thankfully, the series was back on track with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in 2017. Capcom brought back the survival horror to the series with a new protagonist named Ethan Winters in the pursuit of his missing wife, Mia.

Ethan’s investigation led him to the Baker family compound in which a new form of a virus had plagued this once kind family (well, apart from Lucas, he was always a wrong’un). Resident Evil 7: Biohazard brought back horror, tension, puzzle-solving and inventory management.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was played in a first-person perspective. Due to the hardware restrictions in 1996, the first-person perspective was the intended version of the original Resident Evil bringing the series in full circle over 20 years later in a mainline entry.
The series had seen games in a first-person perspective before 2017 but they were mostly light gun games as well as 2000’s clunky Resident Evil Survivor. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is an important game in the series in more ways than one and this game benefitted from a free new-gen update on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.
Yet, thanks to the ever-vibrant modding community, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has been made even better, at least on PC. The mod in question is the ‘4K UHD Upscaled Textures (Ray Tracing Version)’ and it does exactly what it says on the tin, best of all, it’s free to download now via Nexusmods.

The free mod, which is essentially a new-gen remaster, upscales the environmental textures from the game using AI-upscaled software. In particular, it leaves the vanilla 4K textures in the game alone and instead focuses on the initially ignored 1K and 2K textures.
In a nutshell, this means that the grimy, mouldy and insect-ridden home of the Baker family now looks even more gorgeous. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
