Former professional Gears of War and Fortnite player Christopher Hill has died at the age of 26 following a shooting incident that took place on 24 August, 2022.
Hill was best known to fans and colleagues as Xcells. He was shot and killed outside of a private home in Boones Hill, Virginia. According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Hill was approached outside of the home shortly after sunset. There was then an “encounter” which resulted in the homeowner opening fire on Hill.
Hill was not known to the homeowner. It’s not currently known why the two became engaged in the lethal altercation. According to WDBJ7, no charges are pending at this time but the investigation remains ongoing.

Hill retired from the professional Gears of War scene back in 2017, yet continued his Fortnite efforts throughout 2018 and 2019. Outside of his esports endeavors, Hill streamed to fans on Twitch. He had over 23,000 followers and last streamed just two days before he was killed.
Tributes have since poured in. Former talent manager Blaze wrote, “This one hurt, Chris was a good man. Casting over him and knowing him was a pleasure. One of the best players to ever touch Gears. Rest in peace bro.” Former Fortnite developer xSUND0WN added, “My soul hurts. I know you were battling so many demons from your past and trying to be a better person. I'll cherish the times we got to talk and watching you compete. Regardless of any and everything, you didn't deserve this Chris.”
